The Railway Children.

It’s so wonderful. You have to read it. It’s set in the early 1900’s in England. There were a lot of “vernacular” tidbits I had to look up, but it was well worth it.  The boy, Peter, was my favorite character. He is smack dab in the middle of 2 sisters, without his father. You really feel for him.  I’ll share this quote with you:

**The children are speaking about being married**
“I suppose I shall have to be married some day,” said Peter, “but it will be an awful bother having her round all the time.  I’d like to marry a lady who had trances, and only woke up once or twice a year.”

“Just to say you were the light of her life, and then go to sleep again? Yes. That wouldn’t be bad,” said Bobbie. (his oldest sister)

“When I get married,” said Phyllis, “I shall want him to want me to be awake all the time, so that I can hear him say how nice I am!”

It made us laugh out loud. And these books always make me wish I had been born at the turn of the century (early 1900’s). So many wonderful things happened then- so many amazing writers!  So much history. But I guess to them it wasn’t history, it was just life…. and probably a hard life for most.
Time for a new book! 🙂
