Katelyn - This boy is so sweet! Keagan makes me smile.

Preschool.

This year Keagan signed up for my Preschool program.  There was a long waiting list and I had to pull some strings, but I got him in 🙂  The class consists of Kennedy and, well, Keagan. 2 children- that’s my limit for preschool.   Last year was a little challenging with Keagan- he kind of wandered around aimlessly, getting into things, interrupting our teaching time, NOT sitting still ever, and well… it just made the days LONG. It was my fault- I didn’t have structure for him, I had nothing for him to do but watch a Leap Frog video and have a snack.  So this year I worked HARD over the summer to come up with some ideas for him- things to keep him occupied and interested while I focus on the older ones.  First thing in the morning (after breakfast and chores, of course), we have our “Preschool Time.”  We’re working through one fairy tale a week with this book:  Literature Pockets- Fairy Tales.  So far we’ve done The Gingerbread Man, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs. Once we’ve finished this book, we’ll move on to the Nursery Rhymes version. The book has enough activities to last an entire week and both Kennedy and Keagan are LOVING it!  I also add a “letter a week” and pull 3 to 4 manipulatives each day for him to work with- things like lacing beads, dry erase board with dry erase crayons (have you seen these? they’re awesome!), magnetic fishing pole so he can “fish” for letters.  He rotates throughout the morning between learning time with Cade, play time with Kennedy and Chloe, Educational video time, craft time with Canyon and snack time.  So far, so good. I haven’t had any interruptions in my focused time with the older 3 kids and honestly, I can already see how much he’s learning. It’s been such a blessing. Now… Chloe’s starting to drop her morning nap.  She’s been trying for about a month now, but I’m fighting it. I still have her rest/nap for an hour in the morning, but some days it makes her afternoon nap a little challenging.  That’s the funny thing about scheduling with children- you JUST get into the groove of the “perfect” schedule and BAM! someone changes on you.  I guess that’s why we’re supposed to be flexible, huh?

Amber came over for our last day of Goldilocks and the Three Bears while the other kids went to April’s for our Science co-op.  We made bear cookies with peanut butter and chocolate chips- yum! While I LOVE teaching the grammar and fractions and history, I have to say I’ve really enjoyed all the FUN, colorful, creative time we’ve had already this year. And it’s always amazing to me how interested the older kids become when I start reading even the most familiar of storybooks. They all tend to stop what they’re doing and gravitate toward the schoolroom to hear it again. I love it! I love my job.

Mary - Note to self: when you buy the Star Wars dress up clothes for Keagan, maybe pick up an apron for him too. 🙂

Hallie Gardner - OHHHH, it makes me super duper excited to start! I am using the same literature pockets, and scheduled some similar play times for the big boys with Chase while I work with the other one. We have also been working on Chase’s room time, hoping to have it up to an hour during our morning school sched! You are a great teacher! Can I go ahead and sign Chase and Zachy up for your preschool class?

jenny - Caleb just read this, and asked me to politely request if perchance you mightn’t allow one more perfectly behaved youngster into your roster?

emily - Sure girls- bring them on over! The more the merrier! ♥

Catching up a little bit…

My blog was down this weekend and it made me a little sad, a little nervous, but mostly it made me make the changes that have been on my “to-do list” for quite some time.  I’ve added a few new features to my blog- like a sidebar on the left with links to friends’ blogs. I updated the look a little, but I’m not 100% satisfied yet so you’ll probably see that changing soon, too.  I’ll be updating the slideshow at the top of the blog- eventually.
Until then, I found a few photos I wanted to share… just a few that caught my eye.  I love the relationship they have (Chloe & Canyon). She loves him so so much. And he LOVES her & takes such great care of her.

We started school on the 8th of August. I started early so we can take some time off when the baby is born. Keagan is officially enrolled in my Preschool class & he LOVES it!  Kennedy comes to our PreK, too and I think she enjoys it just as much as he does.

I love this photo because, without words, it describes their personalities.

Chloe likes to hide in this cabinet. At least we know where to find her if she’s ever missing 🙂

Every day she climbs up onto the couch with a book and sits for about 5 minutes reading it.  She even babbles as if she really is enjoying it!

The hair seems to be under control at this point. It’s long enough for little piggies so I think we’re out of the woods.

This is the view from my new office- best view in the house.

For my *29th* birthday this past week, James took me downtown to the Flower Mart & Fabric District! We picked out all kinds of beautiful fresh flowers for the house and a few fabrics I needed.  Then he took me to Philippe- the Original French Dipped Sandwich place in Chinatown. It’s been on my list for a while so I was SUPER EXCITED to try it out. It didn’t disappoint. Yummy food, awesome atmosphere, good company! Thanks James- great idea!

That’s all for now. Just a little catching up on my part!
